Welcome to 6th Grade Band

Starting in the 6th grade, the beginning band meets daily in ‘like’ instrument classes to focus on playing fundamentals and develop musicians to be ready to perform at a high level by the second year. Students are grouped by instrument family — brass, woodwind, and percussion — to receive focused instruction from our expert directors.

Getting Started

Instrument Rental

Most beginning band students rent their instruments through approved vendors. Rental programs typically include maintenance and insurance. Our directors can recommend trusted rental providers in the Coppell area. Contact us for current vendor recommendations and pricing.

Supplies

In addition to your instrument, students will need essential supplies including a method book, cleaning supplies specific to their instrument, a music stand for home practice, and a pencil for marking music. Specific supply lists by instrument are provided at the beginning of the school year.

Parent Information

New band parents are invited to attend our annual parent meeting at the beginning of the school year. Topics covered include the band schedule, practice expectations, concert dates, and how to support your child’s musical journey. Meeting dates will be announced via email and posted on our calendar.

Practice Expectations

Consistent daily practice is the key to success in band. Beginning band students are expected to practice 20–30 minutes per day, 5 days per week. Quality practice includes:

  • Warming up with long tones and scales

  • Working through assigned method book pages

  • Practicing challenging passages slowly before speeding up

  • Using a metronome for steady tempo

  • Reviewing music for upcoming performances
