Flute
The flute is the highest pitched instrument in the beginning band. Played by blowing across an opening while pressing keys to change notes, the flute often plays the melody with its clear, penetrating sound.

Oboe
Similar in appearance to a clarinet, the oboe uses a double reed to produce its brilliant and distinct sound. Soloistic and melodious, only a select few students are chosen for oboe.

Clarinet
A popular choice with a large, beautiful woody texture and extensive range. The mouthpiece and single-reed produce its characteristic sound.

Bassoon
The lowest sounding woodwind with a dignified, majestic sound. One of the most specialized instruments — universities often offer substantial scholarships to bassoonists.

Saxophone
A woodwind instrument made of brass, known from jazz and rock music. Versatile in concert band settings, with opportunities to play tenor or baritone saxophone after the beginning year.

Brass
Trumpet
The highest brass instrument, recognized by its bright, clear sound. Frequently plays melody and is used across jazz, pop, and orchestral music.

French Horn
Produces sound by buzzing into a small mouthpiece. With the widest range of any brass instrument, it’s one of the most commonly heard instruments in movie soundtracks.

Trombone
Recognized by its long slide, one of the most powerful instruments in the band. Used as both melodic and supporting instrument across jazz, blues, rock, and orchestral music.

Euphonium
Sometimes known as the baritone, it looks like a miniature tuba. Has grown to become one of the most popular instruments for solo playing due to its rich sound.

Tuba
The most important instrument in the band — the largest and lowest of wind instruments. Even the smallest students can handle it with proper instruction. A practice instrument is issued to keep at home.

Percussion
Percussion
Often referred to as ‘drums,’ percussion is much more than that. Percussionists learn mallet instruments (bells, xylophone), battery percussion (snare, bass drums), and accessory instruments (tambourine, triangle). Enrollment is limited and requires an additional evaluation.
